Driving to walk in the footsteps of Robert Johnson
Mar 30th, 2008 by Otto Berchem |

Last summer, while we were in Memphis, I had this idea of trying to talk Charles and Kerstin into a short trip down to Clarksdale, Mississippi, to go find the crossroad where Delta Blue’s legend Robert Johnson allegedly sold his soul to the Devil.

To be honest, considering that I’ve never been a rabid fan of the Blues, or even the Rolling Stones for that matter, I’m not really sure why I wanted to go. I suppose I can blame Ralph Macchio.

Twenty dollars worth of gasoline and 2 hours later, we found the Crossroad, or if truth be told, one of the +/- 4 crossroads where Johnson is reported to have made his business transaction.

After gazing upon the less scenic crossroad of Highways 61 and 49, we continued on down the 61.

We did our best to get a gander of the Mississippi in Mississippi, but due to a storm almost two weeks ago, the river has risen. Fortunately, this time, the levees are holding.

One apparent benefit of the high waters is that the fishing is a little easier.

Eventually we found ourselves in Greenville Mississippi, which was when we decided to do a U-turn at the next cross roads, and head back to Bluff City.
